Joseph James ‘Red Fox Russian Imperial Stout’

redfoxJoseph James is a brewery located in Henderson, Nevada.
Though I’ve never seen any of their products in stores near me, I’ve had the pleasure of drinking four of their beers over the past year or so.
I have a nephew who lives in Vegas and he turned me on to this Brewery. Because of him I was able to try Rye’d N Dirty (a black IPA), Barrel Smoker (a smoked wee heavy ale), Hop Box Imperial IPA, and this lovely choice Red Fox Russian Imperial Stout.
If you’re a fan of Imperial Stouts, and why wouldn’t you be, then you’ll find that this one has the typical coffee and chocolate notes common in most beers of this variety. The taste that stood out most to me however, was a smoky roasted malt, almost burnt flavor. Calling it a burnt flavor might sound harsh but it really came off nicely.
I also definitely detected a hoppy bitterness. Understandable, since this beer has 80 IBU’s, which is relatively high for a stout. Another thing I found interesting is that the body of this beer wasn’t as heavy as many other stouts I’ve had in the past. I didn’t find it quite as filling, which is good if you want to drink a few, but be wary of the 9.3 ABV!
Or not. Who am I to tell you what to do?
I will tell you that if you come upon any offerings from Joseph James, give them a try. I don’t believe you will be disappointed.
My nephew informed me that this is one of the many microbreweries that is now owned by big beer. Miller bought them a few years ago, but he also assured me that the quality of their products did not suffer as a result. From what I’ve tasted I believe him.
I Give Red Fox a solid 4 out of 5 Keg Rating
